An image can contain metadata that apps like Photoshop and Windows File Explorer can see but that's a different type of metadata.

But at least it does that automatically.Īs far as I can tell, an image file is simply an image file with no metadata in it as far as Obsidian is concerned. But that creates an additional file that can contain metadata. The Binary File Manager creates a secondary companion MD file when we add an image to Obsidian. Very preliminary experiments: it might be even more steps, and doesn't link directly to the image file? I think Excalidraw does something like this, but man, Excalidraw is a rabbit-hole I'm not sure I want to go down yet lol. I feel like there must be a way to use image meta data, but this gets beyond my technical pay grade lol. This is acceptable but is extra work and doubles the number of files. I could just make a new note for each image, with front matter for tags. I have MOC notes where I'll (infrequently) add recent images (Images MOC -> Landscapes MOC -> Plains Images, Forest Images, Mountain Images, Island Images, etc.) but now I've just made a folder structure and that's unwieldy.

It takes me right out of my writing flow lol. I'm up to 174 images in the Attachments folder, and it's obvious that scrolling through a bunch of images will not be a sustainable practice. Sometimes I use an image as a starting point for creative writing, but often I'm writing something else and I'm pretty sure I've saved an image that I could include, e.g. I have an Attachments folder, where I occasionally save images. So one of the ways that I use Obsidian is for creative writing, world building, and D&D GM Prep (which has been incredibly satisfying). Tl dr: What's the best way to make images searchable?
